Woodvale Vintners Riesling takes out Best in Show at 2018 Langton’s Clare Valley Wine Show
Kevin Mitchell and wife Kathleen Bourne of Woodvale Vintners were ecstatic to win not only the Jim Barry Perpetual Trophy for Best Wine in Show last Friday at the Langton’s Clare Valley Wine Show, but to also walk away with the Best Exhibition Section Dry Riesling 2016 Vintage and Older and the Best Riesling of Show . These awards come off the back of being named in James Halliday’s Top Ten New Wineries in the 2018 Wine Companion, proving the new label is not a one hit wonder.
“It is particularly rewarding that our first major accolade in Clare came from the family vineyard that we planted ourselves with the assistance of my dad, Mort, marked out with our son Jack when he was just 3 years old and worked by all of us over the years. It’s even more pleasing to have won this award in what was such a trying vintage… it gives us heart that our hard work and long hours have been acknowledged by our peers”, Kevin said.
Kathleen added , “we would especially like to the sponsors of these awards,, Commonwealth Bank, Laffort, one of our major winery suppliers and of course, Langton’s, who only sponsor 3 wine shows in Australia, and Clare being selected as one, highlights the faith that one of the largest distributors of wine have in the Clare Valley as producers of fine wines, in particular Riesling. This was backed up in the comments of judges highlighting how important the Clare Valley is as producers of world class Riesling. As my brother Stuart said , we won Best Riesling in Riesling Land.”
The 2016 Woodvale Spring Gardens Shiraz received a Silver Medal in the Shiraz class, rounding out a successful day for the small family brand.
